Nigercem Nkalagu is planning to begin production in a move which will reinforce Nigeria’s cement production capacity, which presently stands at 25Mt.
After shutting down in 2003, the Federal Government made a pledge in May 2017 to ensure that Nigercem was re-opened.
Chief David Umahi, the Governor of Ebonyi State, has informed stakeholders that BUA Cement and Lafarge Group are interested in the deposits of limestone within the area.
The Sun News reports that Umahi recognised how the nation’s recession was caused by dependence on oil.
"If we don’t do things differently now, we may be heading for crisis" said Umahi.
Nigeria plans to save over US$2bn annually from the fulfilment of the nation’'s cement production capacity.
