IEA and CSI prepare for 'Low-carbon transition Roadmap' launch

IEA and CSI prepare for 'Low-carbon transition Roadmap' launch
28 March 2018

The new Global Cement Technology Roadmap wil be launched online on Friday, 6 April 2018. The Technology Roadmap builds on the long-standing collaboration between the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

The new Roadmap aims to capture the current situation of the global cement industry by analysing recent regional production and energy performance trends. This roadmap identifies some possible pathways for the cement sector to achieve the decoupling of expected cement production growth from related direct CO2 emissions in the IEA’s 2°C scenario through: improving energy efficiency, switching to fuels that are less carbon intensive, reducing the clinker-to-cement ratio, and implementing emerging and innovative technologies such as carbon capture.

The report outlines a detailed action plan for the industry and other stakeholders towards 2050 as a useful reference of how to contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The Roadmap sets out key emission reduction technologies, discusses technical challenges and investment needs, as well as enabling policies to provide inspiration for international and national policy makers and investors to support evidence-based regulations and decisions.
