The president of the Cibao Housing Promoters and Builders Association, Anthony Canaan, has denounced a 43 per cent price hike in cement prices in the Dominican Republic, according to the Dominican Today. Mr Canaan noted that stability in the exchange rate and prices of different raw materials means there is no justification for the increase.

"In recent days we have received an unjustified increase in the raw material for construction," said Mr Canaan. "Currently the different cement distributors have billed the bag at DOP315 (US$6.20), when just a year ago the cement was sold at DOP220, this means an increase of 43 per cent," he said.

The president of the association also commented that the rise makes the sector les competitive, despite it being the Dominican economy’s top employer.
