Nigeria-based Lafarge Africa plc has has expanded its low-carbon multipurpose cement portfolio with the launch of ECOPlanet Elephant. The new product is said to achieve a 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional alternatives.

Lolu Alade-Akinyem, group managing director and CEO for Lafarge Africa, described the product as a “game changer” for Africa’s built environment. It follows the successful launch of ECOPlanet Unicem in 2024.

“The industry’s positive reception to ECOPlanet Unicem last year demonstrated a clear demand for sustainable building materials. We are proud to now offer our low-carbon ECOPlanet Elephant cement, further empowering our customers to make environmentally conscious choices without compromising on the renowned quality and performance our products are known for,” said Mr Alade-Akinyem.

The launch comes against the backdrop of an ongoing court case in Nigeria challenging Lafarge Africa's planned sale of its shares to Chinese firm Huaxin Cement
