Sampyo Cement is expanding the use of artificial intelligence at its Samcheok cement plant in Gangwon Province, South Korea, as it seeks to improve process control and address a growing shortage of skilled workers.
The plant has introduced an AI-based autonomous control system that analyses operating conditions and recommends control values for processes including raw material preparation, alternative fuels and clinker production. The technology is intended to reduce operator workload while allowing personnel to spend more time inspecting equipment in the plant.
Sampyo Cement said AI is being used to capture and apply the operational knowledge of experienced employees, although human operators continue to handle unexpected process conditions and retain final control. The company said training an experienced plant operator can take five to 10 years, while recruitment has become increasingly difficult as the population around Samcheok declines.
The producer plans to extend AI applications across the plant and has introduced AI proficiency as a criterion in its latest recruitment programme. CEO Bae Dong-hwan said the company currently has no plans to reduce its workforce as a result of AI adoption.
