Fortera and Mississippi Lime Co (MLC) have agreed to develop a commercial facility capable of producing more than 300,000tpa of Fortera’s ReAct™ low-carbon cement in the USA.
The proposed plant will use Fortera’s ReCarb technology to capture CO2 released during MLC’s production of high-calcium lime. The captured gas will then be used as a feedstock to manufacture cement, enabling the project to use MLC’s existing raw materials, infrastructure and distribution network.
According to Fortera, ReAct cement contains almost 50 per cent captured CO2 by weight and can be used independently or blended with ordinary Portland cement. The company claims that its process can reduce cement-production emissions by 70 per cent while achieving cost parity with conventional Portland cement. The product has undergone third-party testing and complies with ASTM standards, it added.
The agreement represents a substantial scale-up from Fortera’s existing 15,000tpa demonstration facility in Redding, California. The company said the additional capacity would help meet US demand in a market where imports supply approximately one-quarter of cement consumption.
The partners have not disclosed the proposed location, investment, financing structure, construction timetable or targeted commissioning date. Further project details are expected in the coming months.
