The Croatian government has appointed Holcim Croatia and Nexe to remove and recover approximately 650t of non-hazardous waste stored at the former PPK Velebit industrial site in Gospic.
The cement producers must begin work immediately and complete the removal, transport and treatment of the bagged material within 45 days. The government awarded the work to the two companies after Tabak Grupa withdrew its offer.
Holcim will recover approximately 300t at its Koromacno cement plant as part of its regular production process. The material comprises waste plastics, tyres and residues from mechanical waste treatment and will be used similarly to the refuse-derived fuel already consumed by the plant.
Croatia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition said several independent analyses had classified the material as non-hazardous.
Holcim said every shipment would be analysed before acceptance and processed under its existing environmental permits. Kiln emissions will be monitored continuously and reported to the relevant authorities, according to the company.
