Cheshire East Council has unanimously backed a motion formally opposing the proposed Peak Cluster CO2 pipeline, which would connect cement and lime plants in Derbyshire and Staffordshire to offshore storage beneath the Irish Sea.

The motion requests independent environmental, hydrological, economic and safety assessments of the proposed route options before any development consent application is determined. It also calls for the council’s concerns to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate and for Peak Cluster representatives to present their proposals directly to councillors.

The network would serve facilities including Breedon’s Hope, Tarmac’s Tunstead and Holcim’s Cauldon cement works. The developer revised approximately 15 per cent of the proposed route in September following consultation and further studies.

The council’s objection does not constitute a planning refusal. As a nationally significant infrastructure project, the scheme requires government approval through the Development Consent Order process.
