Heidelberg Materials Egypt has acquired a minority stake in ZeroCarbon, an Egyptian waste-management and alternative-fuels producer, to strengthen fuel supply and support the development of lower-carbon cement materials.

The investment will support a new refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production facility in 10th of Ramadan City and upgrades to ZeroCarbon’s existing sites. The projects are expected to expand RDF and biomass production, although capacity figures, investment value and the size of the stake were not disclosed.

Heidelberg Materials Egypt said the partnership would improve access to alternative fuels and reduce reliance on conventional fossil fuels. It aims to increase RDF’s share to more than 30 per cent of its total alternative-fuel consumption.

ZeroCarbon also plans to develop supplementary cementitious materials through its Ready Rocks subsidiary, drawing on its mining and industrial-minerals expertise to help cement producers reduce clinker use.

Mohamed Hegazy, CEO of Heidelberg Materials Egypt, said the investment formed part of the company’s efforts to reduce emissions and improve resource use across its operations.
