St Marys Cement and Rodan Energy Solutions have agreed to develop a 50MWh behind-the-meter battery energy storage system at the Bowmanville cement plant in Ontario, Canada. The companies describe the planned installation as the country’s largest system of its kind.
The battery will charge during periods of lower electricity demand and supply power when demand and costs are higher, reducing the plant’s peak draw from the grid while supporting operational resilience.
Rodan will finance, develop, own and operate the system using its FlexOps optimisation platform. St Marys Cement, part of Votorantim Cimentos North America, will therefore incur no upfront capital expenditure. The installation will be the group’s first behind-the-meter battery project in North America.
The companies have not disclosed the system’s power rating, investment value, commissioning schedule or expected annual savings.
