Carbon-certification platform Isometric has launched a protocol for issuing environmental attribute certificates for low-carbon clinker, cement and concrete.

The technology-neutral protocol covers emissions reductions achieved through measures including carbon capture, alternative binders, clinker substitution and kiln electrification. Eligible products must comply with a recognised product standard, carry a verified environmental product declaration and achieve at least Band C under the GCCA Low Carbon Ratings. This threshold will tighten to Band B for production from 2030.

Using a book-and-claim model, the protocol allows the environmental attributes to be sold separately from the physical material. Isometric says this could provide additional revenue for producers while enabling buyers to support low-carbon production when direct delivery is impractical.

The methodology establishes requirements for quantification, verification and the prevention of double counting. How buyers may account for the certificates in corporate emissions reporting will depend on the relevant reporting framework.
