Peak Cluster has redesigned the Wirral section of its proposed CO2 transport network, removing the compressor facility included in its earlier plans.
The revised design replaces it with an above-ground installation covering approximately 80m by 80m and a 25m by 25m block-valve station. Together, these would occupy over 85 per cent less land than the proposed compressor station. The maximum height of the associated vent stack has also been reduced from 50m to 10m.
The network would carry captured CO2 from cement and lime plants in Staffordshire and Derbyshire through Cheshire and the Wirral for permanent storage beneath the East Irish Sea. Peak Cluster said the changes followed community feedback and further engineering, environmental and technical assessments.
Consultation on the revised project boundary, pipeline route and infrastructure locations will run from 12 November to 18 December 2026. A further consultation covering more detailed project design, construction and operation is planned for summer 2027.
The Peak Cluster network will serve facilities including Breedon’s Hope, Tarmac’s Tunstead and Holcim’s Cauldon cement works.
