Cheetah Cement Botswana has reaffirmed plans to develop a 0.8Mta cement grinding plant near Gaborone following a visit by Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) representatives to its existing Matsiloje operation.

The proposed US$50m-plus facility would occupy a 19ha site at Mmamashia, approximately 20km from the capital. Earlier project information indicated that 80 per cent of production would be bagged and 20 per cent dispatched in bulk. The plant would use fly ash from Morupule Power Station and nickel slag from Matsiloje as cementitious materials.

Cheetah Cement Botswana is a subsidiary of Namibia-based Whale Rock Cement. BITC previously estimated that construction would create 515 jobs, followed by 120 permanent positions.

The project was originally announced in 2025 and described again by BITC in March 2026. The latest update does not provide a construction start or commissioning date, while BITC said regulatory and infrastructure constraints still require attention. The proposed plant’s clinker supply arrangements have also not been disclosed.
