Holcim has invested in carbon-mineralisation technology developer 44.01, extending an existing collaboration between the companies. The value and ownership terms of the investment have not been disclosed.
44.01 injects captured CO2 into naturally reactive ultramafic rock formations, where it reacts to form stable carbonate minerals. Holcim said its investment would support the technology company’s international expansion and commercial scale-up.
The partners have operated a pilot linked to Holcim’s Emirates Cement Plant in Fujairah, UAE, since July 2026. Designed to capture 4–4.5t of CO2 per day from the plant’s flue gas, the installation transports the captured carbon to a nearby site for underground injection and mineralisation.
Holcim sees the technology as a potential storage route for inland cement plants lacking access to offshore storage networks, subject to suitable local geology. The transaction is Holcim MAQER Ventures’ 22nd investment.
