HeidelbergCement subsidiary, Cadman Materials, in the US has agreed to acquire the Pacific Northwest downstream activities of Cemex for around US$150m. The assets involved are in the states of Oregon and Washington and consist of seven quarries, five ready-mixed concrete plants and two asphalt plants. Together, these employ around 350 people.

Cemex hikes cement price 20% in Mexico

Cemex increased its price for grey cement in Mexico by 20 per cent YoY in 1Q17. It represents the largest first-quarter increase in at least a decade and twice the seven per cent rate of inflation. Cemex reported a jump in net profit to US$336m in the 1Q17 from an income of US$35m in the same period of last year, as the Mexican major as the cement maker continued to sell assets and reduce debt. Cemex SAB de CV has announced that the European Commission has refused Cemex permission to sell its Croation operations to Duna-Drava Cement Kft, a joint venture owned by HeidelbergCement and Schenk Zement AG. Therefore, Cemex will maintain its three cement plants, seven concrete plants and two aggregate quarries in Croatia, as well as its network of maritime and land-based terminals in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro.

UK: small fire at Cemex Rugby plant

A small fire broke out in the dust filtration system at Cemex's plant in Rugby, according to reports in the local press. Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze, which occurred on Tuesday, 4 April. "No one was injured, everyone was safe, that’s the main thing. The emergency services attended which is standard procedure and the fire was brought under control," said Martin Casey, Cemex director of public affairs and communications.
