Dangote Cement is to invest US$450m to double capacity at its Oromia plant in Ethiopia. Local press reported that the Nigerian cement producer has already received a 36ha plot of land from Oromia State, near the plant's site in Mugher, Adebern Wereda The company requested the land from Oromia Investment Commission in September 2015. Dangote Cement said nine-month profit gained 12 per cent as its new operations across the African continent helped offset weaker demand in its home market of Nigeria. Net income was NGN158bn (US$794m) in the nine months through September, compared with NGN141bn a year earlier, the company said in a statement on Monday. Sales rose 18 per cent to NGN366bn. Tanzania: Dangote Cement awards 150,000t coal contract to Tancoal

Dangote Cement in Tanzania awarded Tancoal Energy Ltd, part of Australia’s Intra Energy Corp Ltd, the contract for more than 150,000t of coal, which will be supplied over the course of next year. The AUD9.3m order represents about half of Dangote Cement Tanzania’s coal requirement and will enable Tancoal to increase mine output by 35 per cent.

Zambezi Portland lowers cement price

Competition has forced Zambezi Portland Cement (ZPC) to introduce a new and cheaper cement brand onto the domestic market. The arrival of Dangote Cement in Zambia with its greenfield Masaiti plant has seen cement prices tumble from ZMW70 (US$6.93) to ZMW50 (US$4.95) in a few months. ZPC’s new cement is aimed at the block-making, road construction and light construction market. The price of the new Eagle cement brand will be held at ZMW51.

BUA Group has signed US$600m worth of contracts with China's Sinoma International Engineering Co to double capacity at its Obu cement plant.  The plant currently produces 3.5Mta, but by the end of 2017 capacity will rise to 7Mta.
