Pakistan sees 44% rise in demand for March

Pakistan’s cement sector posted its highest-ever monthly growth of 44.4 per cent YoY for March 2021, rising to 5.773Mt from 3.722Mt in the year-ago period on the back of an increase in domestic consumption and exports. Prism Johnson commissions further WHR and solar capacity

India’s Prism Johnson has commissioned a 12.4MW waste heat recovery (WHR) unit and 10MW of solar power at its cement plant in Satna, Madya Pradesh. This is in addition to the 12.5MW of solar power capacity that was put into operation in the FY19-20 and the 10MW WHR facility that was installed in November 2020 at the same plant. The installations are expected to help the company reduce its dependence on non-renewable sources of energy and are part of its sustainability initiatives.

Dalmia Cement launches production at 2.25Mta expansion

Chhattisgarh truck owners seek 12% increase in transport rates

Truck owners under the umbrella of The Chhattisgarh Transport Association, India, are demanding in a 12 per cent rise in charges to transport cement from plants due to an increase in diesel prices. Since 26 February truckers have been on strike in terms of cement transportation. Initially they sought a 40 per cent hike. The cement companies want to limit price hikes to five per cent. Sri Lankan cement production advances 16% in January

Sri Lanka’s cement output continues to grow following 15.9 per cent YoY growth to 3.93Mt in 2020. In January 2021, the island’s cement manufacturers produced 364,790t of cement, up 15.5 per cent when compared with January 2020. The rise in domestic production and import controls imposed after the first COVID-19 wave in the country have led to a reduction in imports, which fell by 31.2 per cent YoY to 3.25Mt in 2020.

Shree Cement places WHR order

India’s Shree Cement has placed an order for two WHR boilers from ISGEC Heavy Engineering for its Raipur plant. A PH boiler will be set up at the preheater exhaust, while an AQC boiler will be installed at the cooler exhaust from the facility’s 10,500tpd kiln. This is the second order Shree has placed with the engineering firm, according to a statement.

Total cement sales in Pakistan edged up two per cent YoY to 4.6Mt in February 2021, showing sharply decelerating market growth when compared with January, when the market expanded by 16.3 per cent. Birla Corp appoints new CEO

The board of India’s Birla Corp has approved the appointment of Arvind Pathak as its new CEO and managing director for a period of three years, effective from 31 March 2021. The current CEO, Pracheta Majumdar, is expected to continue as the chief management advisor. Mr Pathak has 36 years of experience in the cement industry, having held management positions for over 14 years in various organisations, including ACC, DCP, Adani and Reliance ADAG group, according to Birla Corp.

Dewan Cement sees 77% fall in turnover

Pakistan’s Dewan Cement Ltd has seen a 76.5 per cent YoY decline in net turnover to PKR948.17m (US$5.97m) for the first half of the FY20-21, compared with PKR4.04bn in the year-ago period. The company’s net loss has also expanded to PKR382.71m from PKR172.75m. In the 2QFY20-21, net turnover fell 58.5 per cent YoY to PKR931.64m while its net loss reached PKR266.59m in the quarter.
