Malaysia is proving to be a challenging market for Lafarge where it is reported to have seen profits fall by 72 per cent in 1Q16 to US$5m. Lafarge Malaysia reported a 54.2 per cent drop in third-quarter pretax profit on lower revenue and higher operating cost arising from the increase in electricity and fuel prices. A new, presumed narrowly endemic species of snail has been discovered in a limestone quarry in Malaysia run by Lafarge. The new species of snail, discovered by Fendie Marzuki and Thor Seng Liew at the northern end of Gunung Kanthan, Malaysia, has been named 'Charopa lafargei', recognising that most of the hill is within a concession run by Lafarge Malaysia.
