Canada: LafargeHolcim to shut Kamloops plant21 October 2016, Published under Cement NewsLafarge Canada announced that it will shut its plant in east Kamloops for the foreseeable future. A downturn in demand in Alberta and western Canada and a result of plunging oil prices has made the 0.2Mta works unnecessary. The shutdown is due to be completed by the end of the year and will leave just operational cement plants in British Colombia, a Lafarge plant in Richmond and Lehigh Hanson’s in Delta. USA: Lafarge to part-close Joppa plant15 September 2016, Published under Cement NewsLafarge North America has announced it is to close one of the two kiln lines at its Joppa plant in southern Illinois and lay off about 40 workers. The move, reported by local media, has been attributed to weakening demand. A spokesperson for Lafarge said that the cement market had not grown according to its expectations and thus the firm would scale back production. The works focussed on improving the plant’s environmental impact but also nearly doubled output from 1.3Mta to 2.2Mta. USA: Lafarge cancels Joppa expansion18 May 2016, Published under Cement NewsLafarge North America has put an end to expansion plans at the Joppa Cement Plant, Massac County, Illinois. A spokeswoman for Lafarge, Robin De Carlo, said that the cancellation of plans to install a third kiln at the Illinois plant was due to the two kilns already in operation meeting current needs.
