Weye Construction Materials Ltd (WCM) plans to establish cement and quarry in Chilanga district, Zambia, at a cost of US$45m. US Department of Justice to investigate Cemex over Maceo plant payments

The US Department of Justice is investigating Mexico's Cemex SA over payments concerning the construction of the Maceo cement plant in Colombia. Cemex is being investigated over whether it violated federal bribery laws. Cemex said in a filing Monday that it had received a federal grand jury subpoena related to the Colombian project, located in the municipality of Maceo. San Miguel Corp announces plans for new plant

Cement producers based in the Philippines are investing to expand their capacity on the back of an anticipated demand increase, which could result in an opportunity for exports in the future, according to the Manilla Bulletin. San Miguel Corp have recently announced plans for a new cement plant in Pagbilao, Quezon. The 2Mta facility is expected to begin commercial operation in May 2021, and represents an investment of PHP12bn (US$230.3m).

Philippine cement company Phinma Corp has recently imported 50,000t of cement, or approximately two million bags, from Vietnam with plans to import the same volume per quarter to a total of 200,000tpa as it breaks into the Philippines market. Whale Rock Cement ready to start production in April

Whale Rock Cement, a joint venture between Chinese businesses and a Namibian partner, is to start producing cement in April, under the Cheetah Cement brand, according to company spokesperson Manfred Uxamb. Cuba to modernise cement factories

The Cuban cement industry will begin modernising cement plants this year to increase the country's production. Gujarat Sidhee Cement has commissioned a 5.5MW waste heat recovery unit at its plant in Sidheegram, with effect from Sunday. Elsewhere, the company reported positive results for the 3Q17, with sales rising 21.2 per cent YoY to finish at INR1.28bn (US$19.78m). LafargeHolcim will strengthen its presence in India with the construction of a new cement plant in Marwar Mundawa, in the state of Rajasthan. Nigeria expected to enter growth cycle

Nigeria could be entering the beginning of a growth cycle, suggests research from RMB Nigeria Stockbrokers (RMBNS). Cement consumption has been forecast to increase by seven per cent in 2018, compared with a 17 per cent decline recorded in 2017. Concrete roads and a housing deficit may lead to a 53Mt and 24Mt increase, respectively by 2020.
