Cuba: Cienfuegos reserves sufficient for Karl Marx plant

The quarries of Cienfuegos province, Cuba, have reserves for some 150 years and thus ensure the continued operation for the Karl Marx cement plant, the country’s largest cement producer, according to ACN, the Cuban news agency. There are currently four quarries in operation, producing limestone, marl, zeolites and pellets. They are extracting around 500tph of rock, although they are affected by spare part shortages, caused by lack of funding, which impacts six loaders.

Vanguard Mining Corporation has agreed with Yupolo Resources to buy 80 per cent of equity interest in the company and co-develop a 3500ha gypsum and limestone concession in Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. The board of Hetauda Cement Industries Ltd decided on Tuesday to raise the price of cement due to increased raw material costs. The Nepalese-based cement producer is to increase prices by NPR28.25/bag (US$0.30), the Kathmandu Post reported. Ambuja Cements is set to resume mining operations in Himachal Pradesh after the High Court granted a stay on the Ministry of Environment and Forest’s (MoEF) suspension order which was issued at the beginning of February 2014.
