Over the years the LafargeHolcim cement plant in Trbovlje, Slovenia, has developed new products and improved quality while reducing energy consumption and cutting costs dramatically. All of this is attributed to a mix of good management, the implementation of best practices, reorganisation efforts and, above all, the individuals working within the firm. But when a company reaches a plateau, there are times when management must think outside the box. The challenge is to understand what factors are changing, or what could be done differently to continue to improve the bottom line.
