Engineering for a 50% clinker future

20 April 2026

The real challenge of lower-clinker cements lies in producing them consistently, economically and at scale under the variability of real-world operations. Achieving this depends less on laboratory formulations and more on the design of the plant itself — particularly grinding systems, flowsheets and the ability to manage variable supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). This article explores why many plants remain constrained by equipment and process choices built for a high-clinker world, and what needs to change to unlock the next step in cement decarbonisation.
