Ciments du Lacydon handles first consignment from Marseilles port, France

A 5350t load of cement handled in the Marseilles eastern harbour marked the first consignment for Ciments du Lacydon – and launched a new era for dry bulk operations in this part of the leading French cargo port.

Ciments du Lacydon expects volumes of more than 300,000t within three years and further growth in later years. This will almost double the eastern harbour’s dry bulk throughput and significantly increase port-industrial activity.

Ciments du Lacydon is a subsidiary of family-owned French company Sylvestre and the Belgian company Van Eeckhout.

In setting up at the port, the company will be importing clinker and transporting cement by both sea and inland waterways.

Initially the cement will be stored and packed in two warehouses fitted out by the company, which will be developing a mixing plant in the second half of next year and a bagging plant in 2013 at a total cost of EUR20m.

The port authority said this investment underlined the potential of the cement market and the company’s long-term commitment, as well as the port’s prospects for growing traffic under its strategy of making the eastern harbour a hub for Mediterranean trades in cement, aluminium, sugar and wheat.
