Ghana: cement shortage hits Northern Region
19 January 2011

The Northern Region of Ghana has, for the past two weeks, been hit hard by a shortage of cement.

Although the price per bag has increased from GHS13.50 to GHS15 (US$9-10) in view of the recent fuel hikes, cement simply not available.

This situation has grounded government and private developers’ ongoing projects.

Some cement dealers have started importing cement from neighbouring Togo through Yendi but this does not even get to the Tamale township upon arrival due to the high demand.

Building and road contractors have left their sites and are now in search of cement to complete their projects.

Alhaji Mohammed Shukura, a leading cement dealer at Aboabo expressed worry that the shortage was gradually threatening their businesses.

He said customers who made advance payments for the product are getting impatient over the situation and called on the relevant authorities to intervene to save the situation.
