Algeria to source additional cement imports

Algeria to source additional cement imports
21 July 2010

Algeria will import 350,000t of additional cement. The association of construction material distributors (Sodmac) launched Tuesday, 20 July a call for international tenders in this regard. The opening of bids will take place next August 17, said Sodmac.

In January 2010, the industrial public group of Algeria cements (GICA) had already launched a tender to import 1.5Mt of cement.

Algeria faces frequent shortages of cement with prices continuing to skyrocket in the retail market. Despite the quantities imported and locally produced cement, demand remains unsatisfied due largely to strong speculation in that material and the delay in the implementation and extension of cement plants.
