Lafarge Cement takes to the air
A Scottish builders merchant is supplying Mastercrete Original cement from Lafarge Cement to a cutting-edge hydro-electric energy catchment plant - and delivering it by helicopter.
The plant is being built by contractor Chick Kippen at the Chesthill Estate in Glen Lyon, Perthshire - a family run business which holds sporting activities for the public. The plant development is part of an ongoing programme to make the estate fully sustainable by generating its own electricity.
Local builders’ merchant, Barhaul Aberfeldy is supplying the materials for the project, including an initial three tonnes of Lafarge Cement’s plastic-packed Mastercrete to build the sub station. However, the mountainous terrain at Glen Lyon has presented a logistical challenge in getting materials to the construction site.
Henry Harrison, branch manager at Barhaul Aberfeldy, says: "The construction site cannot be reached by road so Chick Kippen had to hire a helicopter with a winch to transport the materials. Lafarge Cement’s Mastercrete was specified because its durable weather-resistant plastic bags meant it would not be damaged in transit and could be left outside on the hillside during construction."
As one of five sustainable energy projects planned for Glen Lyon, the plant will ultimately supply electricity for the entire estate, generating an output of 1.2 MW at any one time. Excess electricity will be sold back to the National Grid to raise funds for future conservation projects.
