Opponents of the proposed Titan Cement Plant gathered Tuesday night, as they prepare a plan for next week’s public hearings on the project.

The Stop Titan Action Network is fighting to keep Carolinas Cement, a subsidiary of Titan America, from building in the Castle Hayne area of New Hanover County.

Titan Cement seems to have cleared another hurdle in the project, after receiving a preliminary permit from the Division of Air Quality in September.

People who support the cement plant say it will bring jobs to the area, but opponents say the plant will threaten the environment and public.

"I’m concerned about health risks to the children and other folks living in the area, but as a business owner, I’m also concerned about the impact on our economy," said Lloyd Smith with Friends of the Lower Cape Fear.

Stop Titan is focusing their latest effort to prevent the company from getting a final air quality permit.
