Strike at new Caledonia’s cement works ends
A six-week strike at New Caledonia’s only cement plant has been settled after causing massive disruption to the territory’s construction industry.
The conflict ended when the cement producer Holcim accepted the arbitration offer submitted by the territory’s director of labour.
The USTKE union agreed to the proposal after three hours of discussions,saying the deal ends Holcim’s monopoly in New Caledonia and allows construction companies to get cement at a price that is less prohibitive.
The strike had cost 800 workers in the construction sector their jobs and put another 9,000 jobs at risk. Published under Cement News
