Imports relaxed to ease Qatari cement shortage

Imports relaxed to ease Qatari cement shortage
25 September 2007

The authorities of Qatar have relaxed import procedures to stabilise cement supply in Qatar. Local importers will no longer require clearance from Qatar National Cement Company. Any authorised construction company will be able to import cement.

Chronic shortages also pushed up cement prices earlier, but are now easing,  reportedly falling from QR35 a few months ago to QR17 per bag, according to industry sources. Qatar National Cement Company has pushed this price even further down, selling cement at QR14.50/bag. It is further expected though that supply may pick up and shortages eased when GulfCement Company brings its facilities on line and other local producers start up extra capacity in 2008.
