Algerian cement prices soaring due to maintenance shut-downs
13 August 2007

Construction works undergo a disruption recently owe to cement soaring prices nationwide as it reached 470AD per 50kg bag (US$6.87) in addition to the white cement reaching 2500AD per 50kg bag (US$36.50) in many provinces countrywide.

Such price rises are being blamed on periodic maintenance works in cement production units. The crisis, however, is reportedly being fuelled by speculator’s greed.

Many government-sponsored construction departments have submitted reports to the concerned ministry warning from a potential failure of president housing programs bound to a specific time frame. Official sources told El Khabar that the reports seek the urgent intervention in order to remedy the present situation.
