Govt considering import of duty free cement from India
19 October 2005

The Pakistani government is considering to allow the import of duty free cement from India as reconstruction of the quake-hit areas will need huge supply of cement, sources said here on Tuesday. Sources said that builders were already facing high prices of cement in the country and asked the government to allow the import of cement from India as the prices in neighboring countries like China and India were less than Pakistan. Government has allowed the import of cement from neighboring countries but it was banned from India and import from India was in favour as it would take less expenditure charges, sources said. The sources said that import from India, on zero per cent customs duty was the only way to bring down the price of cement to an affordable level and break the cartel of cement manufacturers.
