EAPC eyes Sudan market to raise sales

East African Portland Cement Company plans to have increased its sales figures in Sudan and Rwanda by the end of December.  Managing director, Zakayo ole Mapelu, said yesterday that they would spend up to Sh40 million in the exercise.   He was addressing journalists at the company’s sports club in Athi River, shortly after handing over a cheque for Sh100,000 to the Kenya Union of Journalist officials. The money will go towards the Kenya Journalist of the Year Awards, set for later this month.

Mr Mapelu noted that one of the major challenges the company was facing at the moment was the poor state of the region’s infrastructure. However, he said that the company was already operating two cement depots in Tororo and Mbale in Uganda.  These would target Southern Sudan once the road network was in place.

"So far we are exporting more than 10,000 tonnes of cement to Southern Sudan, and expect to increase it to 20,000t by next year," said Mr Mapelu.  He said that the company also planned to construct a cement mill in the Sudan.
