Cement dealers protest

Cement dealers protest
17 May 2004

All Karachi Cement Dealers Association (AKCDA) has asked the government to take notice of the black marketing of cement by a government owned cement factory and ensure the free availability and sale of cement. Addressing a press conference, AKCDA Convenor Action Committee Shoukat Hussain demanded of the government to solve the problems faced by cement dealers. He alleged that Jawaidan Cement Factory has been captured by some opportunists who are making money by arbitrarily raising the price of cement bags. He demanded that sale of cement be handed over to the genuine dealers after taking back the dealership from the favorite dealer of the factory management. He said the dealer was being offered Rs. 350 per ton rebate and Rs. 25 per ton subsidy, causing Rs. 15 million monthly loss to national exchequer.

He warned that if cement dealers demands were not accepted, they would have no way but to stage protest demonstrations in front of Karachi Press Club and Javadan Cement Factory, while after it a sit-in could be staged in Islamabad.
