Heidelberg Materials and Czech energy company MND are progressing plans for the multi-billion-koruna CCS Moravia project, which could store up to 800,000tpa of CO2 from the Mokrá cement plant from 2034.
According to new Czech media reports, captured CO2 from Mokrá would be stored in porous geological formations in South Moravia. The planned storage facility would have total capacity of around 20Mt of CO2.
MND ultimately intends to develop the project into a wider carbon storage hub, enabling other industrial emitters to use the infrastructure from 2034. The company brings experience in geological exploration, drilling and underground gas storage to the partnership.
The CCS project is being developed alongside Heidelberg Materials' major modernisation of the Mokrá plant. Construction of a new clinker production line was 70.8 per cent complete at the beginning of July, with completion scheduled for 2027. The new line includes a kiln, clinker cooler, preheater, vertical mill and homogenisation silo.
