Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies has partnered with CSBT Environnement to incorporate calcium carbonate recovered from scallop shells into its clinker-free cements.

French company CSBT collects and processes waste scallop shells using mechanical fine grinding without chemical additives. The resulting material comprises marine calcium carbonate with a reported purity of 99 per cent.

Hoffmann Green said the material will be incorporated into its clinker-free cement formulations following development work to meet their technical requirements. CSBT will provide an ongoing supply of the processed material under the partnership.

The companies said the agreement provides a new outlet for shell waste generated by the fishing industry while establishing a circular raw-material supply chain for low-carbon cement production.
