Kenya’s National Cement Co has applied to develop a 60MW wind farm in Kajiado County as it seeks to expand its captive power-generation capacity.
The Devki Group subsidiary has submitted an environmental and social impact assessment for the project to Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), which has opened a 30-day public consultation.The proposed development would comprise 38 wind turbines, a 33/220kV step-up substation, internal access roads, underground and overhead cabling, and a 220kV transmission line and associated wayleave.
The filing does not specify whether all the electricity would be consumed by National Cement’s operations or whether some would be supplied to the national grid.
National Cement, which produces the Simba Cement brand, commissioned a 15MW wind plant serving its Kajiado clinker operations in 2018. It also announced plans in 2023 for a separate 60MW wind farm at Sebit in West Pokot County to reduce its reliance on grid electricity and lower production costs.
