Peak Cluster has revised the proposed route of its carbon dioxide pipeline following public consultation and further engineering and environmental studies. The project would connect Breedon’s Hope, Tarmac’s Tunstead and Holcim’s Cauldon cement plants, along with Buxton Lime’s Tunstead works, to offshore storage in the Irish Sea.
The developer says it has amended approximately 15 per cent of the proposed route. In most locations, it has narrowed the area under consideration from 300m to about 100m, although the land permanently needed for the pipeline would be narrower still. More than 5500 responses were received during the first consultation.
According to the BBC, the scheme faces opposition from residents and several councils along its route. Peak Cluster plans further six-week consultations covering Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire in November, followed by the Wirral in January. Locations for above-ground equipment and land needed temporarily during construction have yet to be finalised.
