Turboden has commissioned a 13MW organic Rankine cycle (ORC) waste-heat recovery power plant at Riyadh Cement in Saudi Arabia. The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries subsidiary describes it as the world’s largest ORC installation at a cement plant and the first in the kingdom.
The system recovers heat from two cement kiln lines through six heat-recovery units connected to a single thermal-oil circuit. An air-cooled condenser enables electricity generation without consuming water, addressing a key requirement for the Saudi installation.
According to Turboden, the plant could generate nearly 80GWh annually and avoid approximately 37,000t of CO2 emissions, while reducing Riyadh Cement’s exposure to electricity price volatility.
The commissioning brings Turboden’s cement-sector portfolio to 21 ORC power plants worldwide, with combined installed capacity exceeding 115MW.
