Clinker imports to Angola decreased 13% in 2Q16

Clinker imports into Angola fell by 13.2 per cent in 2Q16 to 176,678t when compared with the same period in 2015, when the country imported 200,000t of clinker. Turkey imported 29,503t of this total. Angola: Cimangola to cease clinker imports

Nova Cimangola announced that it will stop importing clinker and instead use domestic resources. The company has identified a raw material deposit near Luanda, where its plant is located. According to Manuel Pacavira Júnior, Nova Cimangola administrator, the company will save approximately US$50m a year.

DR Congo: Matadi cement price falls

For the first time in a month, the price of a 50kg bag of cement has fallen in Matadi from CDF12,500 (US$12.16) to CDF8500, according to domestic news reports. The drop in price comes as a result of increased supply of cement imported from Angola. However, sales remain subdued and the Association of Independent Cement Consumers of Kongo-Central has recommended that the government removes the import tax charged at the border post of Lufu.

Sales figures for the Angolan cement market are in decline. The market is down 35 per cent YoY in 2016. With sales figures for 2014 and 2015 being 5.9Mt and 5.2Mt, respectively, the Angolan Cement Association has forecast 2016 sales at a mere 3.8Mt if  the current oil price remains unchanged. Angola has banned the import of cement in 2015 with the country having achieved self-sufficiency in terms of cement production but has set a quota of 150,000t for three outer-lying provinces, the minister for construction said on Monday. Portugal's conglomerate Semapa, owner of cement maker Secil, posted on Friday a 15 per cent rise in nine-month net profit, helped by lower taxes on some of its overseas operations and a small increase in sales. Net profit rose to EUR80m the company said in a statement. Still, EBITDA fell 4.5 per cent from a year ago to EUR98m.
