Semapa, the Portuguese holding company that controls cement maker Secil, said turnover from its cement business operating rose 5.3 per cent YoY to EUR217.3m, driven mainly by increased exports from its home market of Portugal. Nova Cimangola receives funds to boost capacity, Angola

Nova Cimangola is set to receive AOA11.3bn (US$116m) from the Angolan government to increase the cement plant’s production capacity. Fábrica de Cimento do Kwanza Sul (FCKS) has inaugurated its Kwanza Sul Cement plant and is now ready to start supplying cement in Angola following a construction period of four years and six months of tests, said the company's director Tembua Mucazo Roberto.The US$600m project was funded by South Korean group Samsung Corp. New Angola plant to begin commercial production by year-end

The Cuanza Sul cement plant will begin commercial production under the brand name Yeto, the company president, Manuela Vieira Lopes, has said. Final equipment assemply is now underway and the trial phase should begin in October, and production in December, Mr Vieira Lopes told Angop news agency. Earlier, plant manager Tembua Mucazo Roberto had said the plant would begin by producing 4200tpd of clinker which would later be increased to 4500tpd.

Semapa's 1H13 turnover declines

In the first half of 2013, Semapa reported that turnover from its cement division fell 3.2 per cent YoY to EUR233.5m, essentially due to a drop in turnover in Portugal and Angola. EBITDA in the cement business unit stood at EUR28.2m, up by 0.1 per cent on the same period in 2012. In the second quarter, EBITDA from cement business totalled EUR16.2m, up by 34.4 per cent from the previous quarter. Galilei Group plans Angolan investment

The Galilei Group of Portugal plans to enter the Angolan market as part of a joint venture, its chief executive Fernando Lima told local press. Preliminary work on the Cimentos Nacionais Angola (CNA) project has begun, Mr Lima told financial daily Diário Económico, adding that the cement plant will be constructed in partnership with HeidelbergCement. Mr Lima said that construction of the 2Mta facility would begin this year and is expected to cost around US$370m.

Secil Lobito plans to invest US$187m in a new cement plant in in Lobito, Angola, the company's chief executive has said. Augusto Manuel Miragaia, CEO of Secil Lobito, told local press that the new 1.2Mta plant will be built located some 200km from the company’s 0.35Mta grinding works which is situated near Lobito port. Angola: Kwanza-Sul cement factory to start production in 2013

Fábrica de Cimento do Kwanza Sul (FCKS) will start production in November 2013. The factory, which is located at Sumbe in Kwanza-Sul province, Angola, will produce 4500tpd cement when fully operational. Construction of the US$600m plant is being carried out by ETA Star from Dubai, UAE, while equipment has been supplied by FLSmidth, Denmark. FLSmidth will also operate the plant under an operation and maintenance contract.

Portugal’s Secil leapt on to the African cement news pages this week with its announced intention to increase production at its Lobito plant in Angola from 0.28Mta to 1.8Mta.
