PPC commits to new DRC plant

PPC has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Barnet Group, its local partner in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to build a US$230m cement factory there. Ketso Gordhan, CEO of PPC, said that the greenfield project in the DRC included the construction of a 1Mta cement factory and associated quarry. The plant would take about 24 months to complete. The foundation stone for the expansion of CIMERWA cement factory in Rwanda was laid yesterday by the president of the African nation Paul Kagame. The expansion project will lift capacity of Rwanda’s sole cement producer from 100,000tpa to 600,000tpa and has been made possible following PPC’s acquisition of a controlling stake in CIMERWA last December. South Africa’s leading cement producer Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) has acquired a 51 per cent equity stake in Rwanda-based cement producer Cimerwa Ltd. The deal is worth a total cash consideration of US$69.4m. Cimerwa is situated in southwestern Rwanda and is the African country’s sole cement producer.
