Fiji's construction sector is thriving

Construction activity continues to thrive as revealed by partial indicators of the Reserve Bank of Fiji.  The central bank revealed that up to September 2015 domestic cement sales rose by 46 per cent (to 130,522t) YoY. In the first half of 2015, the total value of work put in place by the construction sector rose by10.9 per cent YoY to US$226.3m. South Pacific Cement, a joint venture between Holcim New Zealand and Fletcher Building Ltd, has sold its 47 per cent stake in Pacific Cement Ltd (PCL) to the Vinod Patel Group. PCL is a joint venture with Fijian Holdings Ltd (FHL), which holds a 51 per cent stake. The balance of shares is owned publicly. Tengy Cement (Fiji) Company Ltd (TCFL), a Chinese investment company, has officially launched operations on the island of Fiji. Construction of the plant, situated in the outskirts of Lami, Suva, started in 2012 and was completed last year. Cement production began in February 2014 with 20,000tpa produced to date. Pacific Cement Limited (PCL), formerly Fiji Cement Industries, has reported positive progress with its branded cement following an increase in demand for supplies from distributors. Fiji Industries Ltd (FIL) has denied claims made by the special administrator of Suva City Council (SCC) of a cement shortage. Fiji Industries Ltd has started the production of cement today. The mill broke down two weeks ago resulting in short supply of cement across the country. Fijian Holdings Ltdd Group Acting CEO Nouzab Fareed said the mill is at 40% capacity and hopes to reach 100% capacity and 24 hour production by Sunday.
