Cement demand in Spain registered its first monthly growth since the recession started as it reached 875,000t in March, up 16 per cent YoY, according to Oficemen data. However, the increase has been attributed to a weaker comparative period, with the Easter holiday falling in March last year resulting in few working days. Cemex to appeal Spanish fine

Cemex said Spanish tax authorities have fined its Spanish subsidiary EUR455m (US$620m) following an audit of the unit's tax returns for the years 2006 through 2009. Cemex Espana plans to appeal the fines, the company said Friday in a filing with the Mexican Stock Exchange. Holcim Spain issues new ERE

Holcim Spain has presented a new record of employment regulation (ERE) that will affect 141 staff. While Holcim is reported by construction organisation Fecoma to have plans to sell its Gádor (Almería) cement works, the ERE mainly affects workers in the concrete mortar and aggregates divisions. FCC to increase stake in Cementos Portland to 78%

FCC will increase its participation in Spain-based cement producer Cementos Portland from 69.8 to 78 per cent. The transaction will be carried out by a capital increase of EUR111m through the capitalisation of a EUR100m subordinated loan granted by FCC. Mexico and Argentina impact 2013 Molins results

The market contraction in Mexico and a devaluation of the Argentine peso impacted the annual results of Cementos Molins. The Spanish company saw profit fall by 77 per cent to EUR10.1m although this is not comparable with the EUR20m of the previous year as the cement producer sold its stake in Cementos Artigas of Uruguay. Cemex celebrated the end of 2013 with a zero-accident rate in its 65 Spanish work sites. The company attributes the success to its “Zero Accident” campaign, started in 2007. In some works, new records were set in terms of days without accidents. Cementos Cosmos restarts Toral kiln, Spain

After a two-month shutdown and an investment of around EUR2m, Cementos Cosmos has lit the kiln at its Toral de los Vados plant following an upgrade project.  The works were carried out to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the facility and include a remodelling of the kiln to reduce energy consumption. The project has brought Toral, which celebrates its 90th year of continued operation, up to date and transformed it into a modern and efficient works.

Lacklustre start to year for Spain

Spanish cement producers can only hope for a better 2014 as demand figures for January 2014 show a 13.6 per cent fall to 764,011t, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. However, the rate of market contraction appears to be slowing somewhat. Over the past 12 months, consumption fell by 18.7 per cent. But recovery seems some time away as the result is worse than predicted. Oficemen had indicated in December that it expects a 7-8 per cent decrease for 2014.

The Spanish cement market contracted by a further 19.2 per cent in 2013, bringing national cement consumption to 10.981Mt from 13.597Mt the previous year, according to Oficemen, the cement association of Spain. Cemex to export 100,000t white cement from Sagunto

Mexico-based cement producer Cemex anticipates it will export 100,000t of white cement through the port of Sagunto, Spain. A first shipment is expected to leave the port for Greece, carrying 4500t of cement. A second dispatch will deliver a similar volume in big bags.
