Spain: November demand up, 2014 largely stable

Cement consumption in Spain rose 2.7 per cent in November to 902,312t, according to the latest data of Oficemen. The November data take domestic consumption in the first 11 months of 2014 to 10,009,922t, slipping by 0.3 per cent on the previous year’s figure. Alfonso Conde has been appointed COO of Cemex in Aragon, Spain. His new responsibilities will include managing quarrying operations, the integrated cement works of Morata de Jalon, as well as the company’s Aragon mortar and concrete plants. Spain’s monthly demand advances 5% YoY

Cement consumption in Spain increased by five per cent to 1,037,219t in October when compared with the same period last year, latest data from domestic association Oficemen shows. Despite the industry’s recovery still being far off, October’s advance is the second consecutive monthly rise following September’s 6.1 per cent YoY increase. In the first 10 months of 2014, cement demand  slipped 0.5 per cent YoY to 9,116,872t. Figures for the rolling year show a 2.2 per cent fall.

Cementos Portland reports EUR45.3m net loss in 9M14

Spain's Cementos Portland has reported a EUR45.3m net loss in 9M14, a 92.1 per cent increase when compared with the loss noted in 9M13. Turnover fell by 1.6 per cent YoY to EUR406.6m as non-profitable plants were closed, but cement sales were up by five per cent. EBITDA rose 95 per cent to EUR82.6m, fuelled by efficiency measures implemented in Spain and the US, the deregulation of the cement industry in Tunisia, sustained growth in the US and improved emission rights sales in Spain.

Cemex Lloseta completes environmental upgrade

Cemex’s 0.804Mta Lloseta plant in Mallorca, Spain, has concluded its US$16m environmental upgrade. The work included noise abatement systems, paving roads for heavy traffic as well as erecting covered raw material and coal storage silos. The plant also raised alternative fuel use from five to 35 per cent and installed more efficient burners, effectively reducing CO2 emissions by 3.8 per cent per tonne of clinker between 2006-14. The company now emits some 80,000t of CO2 less than in 2006.

Maruxa Suarez is new Lafarge Villaluenga plant director

Maruxa Suarez has been appointed as the new plant director of Lafarge’s Villaluenga de la Sagra works in Toledo, Spain. She replaces Mariano Garcia Hoyos, who was appointed industrial director of Lafarge Malaysia. Matteo Rozzanigo has been appointed as CEO of FYM, Italcementi’s Spanish subsidiary. He is tasked with positioning the company in a cement market, which is expected to stabilise and recover slowly after a prolonged crisis period. Spain: September demand up 6.1%

In September, Spain’s cement consumption rose 6.1 per cent YoY to 959,150t, according to the latest figures issued by Oficemen, the country’s cement association. Cemex reaches agreement regarding Alcanar, Spain

Cemex has reached an agreement with the Santi Vila authorities to keep running its Alcanar works in Tarragona, Spain. In return the Generalitat commits to dredge the port of Barcelona so large vessels can moor and as such, enable Cemex to export to new markets such as the US.
