Votorantim subsidiary St Mary’s Cement is proposing to spend around US$130m to a kiln expansion and modernisation programme at its works at Charlevoix, Michigan, USA. This is expected to increase the capacity from the current 1.4Mta to 2Mta.  Elsewhere, Votorantim’s Spanish subsidiary, Cementos Cosmos, has celebrated three accident-free years as the parent company spent in excess of EUR1m to improve the company’s health and safety record.

Spanish demand to November increases 5%

Spain’s cement market has expanded by 5.2 per cent YoY to 10,573,572t between January-November 2015, according to Oficemen, the country's cement association. In November alone, demand rose by 13.8 per cent to 1,008.789t, helping to boost full-year forecasts. Estanda has supplied a LafargeHolcim cement plant in Nigeria with new designs for more efficient dip tubes, the Spanish equipment supplier said in a statement. Spanish consumption sees October drop

Cement demand in Spain fell by 2.4 per cent in October 2015 to 1.025Mtt, or 23,716 below the October 2014 level. In the first 10 months of 2015, domestic cement consumption increased 4.3 per cent YoY to 9.56Mt. "The latest data is a significant setback for our industry, which has seen the growth rate of 8.6 per cent noted in the first half year halve in just four months, " said the CEO of Oficemen, Aniceto Zaragoza.

Cementos Portland to refinance EUR817m debt, reports 9M15 results

Cementos Portland is currently analysing “various alternatives” to refinance EUR817m of debt, 59 per cent of its total liabilities, which expires in 2016. Spain's Cementos Molins registered a net profit of EUR41.9m in the first nine months of the year, up 37.6 per cent YoY, according to the company. LafargeHolcim plans to launch a downsizing plan for 15 per cent of its workforce in Spain, according to local press reports. Spain’s cement consumption in the first nine months of 2015 increased by 4.8 per cent, but the growth rate decelerated in the past three months, according to Oficemen, the country’s cement association.
