The board of Spain’s Cementos Portland Valderrivas has formally approved the sale of a 55 per cent stake in its US unit Giant Cement Holding to Mexico’s Elementia, owned by Carlos Slim, who owns a 35.6 per cent holding in the Mexican company via his Grupo Carso. The deal includes a US$220 capital increase in Giant with subscription rights granted to Elementia, who will extend a loan of US$305m to the US unit. Spain: Portland Valderrivas quadruples 9M loss

FCC subsidiary Cementos Portland Valderrivas of Spain reported a EUR233.3m loss in the first nine months of 2016, quadrupling its loss noted in 9M15. Revenues stood at EUR429.3m, 1.6 per cent below Jan-Sep 2015, as a result of shrinking markets in Spain and Tunisia, according to the company’s filing with the National Market Commission (CNMV). Spain sees demand fall 3.4% in September

Spanish cement consumption contracted 3.4 per cent in September to reach 973,047t, according to the country’s cement organisation, Oficemen. In the January-September 2016 period demand slipped 2.9 per cent to 8.4Mta. The Votorantim Cementos Spanish subsidiary Cementos Cosmos is to restart cement production at its Oural works in Galicia (Spain) in 2017 following a four-year closure.  This is expected to lead to the creation of 40 direct jobs, 50 indirect jobs and a further 300 indirect employment opportunities.

Spain's cement demand resumes growth

Spanish cement consumption increased 3.2 per cent to 930,593t in August when compared with August 2015, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. Cementos Molins applies to raise tyre use

Recognising the need to increase its use of tyres as fuel to fire its kiln, Cementos Molins is applying to extend its licence. Initially, Catalonia’s provincial government authorised Cementos Molins to burn 5000t of tyres as fuel for its kiln in its Sant Vicenç dels Horts plant, but following the success of the operation, the cement producer has now applied to raise this figure to 20,000t. Cementos Portland reported a loss of nearly EUR36.8m (US$40.5m) in the first half of 2016, a 7.9 per cent YoY improvement when compared with the EUR39.9m loss in 1H15. EBITDA improved 23 per cent to EUR46m.
