Rise in cement consumption prompts expansion plans in Sri Lanka

Cement consumption in Sri Lanka increased by 25.3 per cent YoY in 2016, to 7.99Mt from 6.37Mt. While local cement production also rose by 17.8 per cent to 2.69Mt from 2.28Mt in 2015, imports increased 29.5 per cent to 5.29Mt from 4.09Mt in 2015. Insee Cement has launched a competition for customers who buy Sanstha Cement. Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) PLC agreed to a settlement over a suit filed against Ruhunu Lanka Cement (Pvt) Ltd in the Commercial High Court of the Western province, Sri Lanka. Japan-based Ube Industries' Singapore subsidiary Ube Singapore Holdings has acquired a further 10.62m shares in Sri Lanka-based Tokyo Cement Company Lanka Plc, for LKR764.6m (US$5m), a stock exchange filling said. As at 31 March 2017, Ube Singapore Holdings held a share of over two per cent (4.4m shares) in Tokyo Cement. With this new acquisition its shareholding has increased to over 10 per cent.

Vietnam April exports up 6.7%

Vietnam exported more than 1.9Mt of cement and clinker, reflecting an export value of US$67.4m, according to the country’s Customs Department. This represents a YoY increase of 6.7 and 7.6 per cent, respectively. In the first four months of the year, the country exported 6.7Mt of cement and clinker, up 12.8 per cent YoY.
