Japan-based Sumitomo Osaka Cement's group operating profit is expected to jump 13 per cent for the April-September half on rising sales and declining coal prices, according to a Nikkei earnings preview report. The profit of around JPY10bn (US$82.1m) would be a record for the half, surpassing guidance of JPY9.1bn. Sumitomo Osaka Cement reports strong quarterly rise

Japan's Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co Ltd reported a 26.8 per cent YoY rise in operating profit to JPY4.43bn (US$35.7m) over the April-June quarter. Sales during the period climbed to JPY56.78bn, up six per cent over the same quarter of last year. Earnings per share rose to JPY7.68, up from last year's JPY5.69 for the same quarter. The cement producer has announced it is to raise capacity at its Kochi plant in western Japan by some 0.2Mta, with completion scheduled for 2017.

Japanese producers increase exports

Japanese cement producers have increased export levels in a bid to help offset a slowdown in domestic consumption due to a slump in housing investment. Japanese cement producer Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co will increase cement capacity in China's Yunnan Province by 2016 through the construction of new facilities. Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co plans to lift sales of power generated in-house at a Tochigi Prefecture plant using wood biomass fuel, according to reports in the Nikkei.
