Ugandan cement producers given three weeks to lower prices

Uganda's Government, through the Ministry of Trade and Cooperatives, has vowed to allow cheap imported cement into the country if local cement manufacturers do not lower prices.

Uganda cement prices rise due to cement shortage

Cement prices in Uganda have increased by UGX5000-11,000 (US$1.35-2.98) within a month, sparking a country-wide crisis in the building sector, according to the Daily Monitor. Pader District, some 411km from the capital Kampala, reported the highest price at UGX50,000 for a 50kg bag of cement. Cement prices have risen in Uganda since the start of the year, with wholesale prices now between UGX29,000-30,500 (US$7.90-8.40)/bag. Tororo Cement has announced that prices increased to UGX29,500 from UGX28,500 recorded in the first week of January 2018, according to the Daily Monitor. " There is an increment of UGX1000. A number of projects in Uganda are expected to commence operation this year, taking total cement production to 6.8Mta from 3.6Mta, reports Ugandan newspaper The Independent. Hima Cement’s new 1Mta facility in Tororo is expected to open in 1Q18 and will take the company’s overall capacity to 1.8Mta.
